Mumu Fresh sang at Hopkins today When US troops came to destroy native villages, native men would go off to fight while women stayed in the village. US troops would not engage in battlefield but rather go to villages and rape or kill women and children. Natives did not understand that form of battle, so native women started fleeing to the mountains whenever their husbands went off to a war and they would wave their shawls in the mountains so that their husbands could find them when they returned and retrieve them to rebuild their village.

Typically I find myself cocooned in these discussions via my International Studies and Sociology classes, but over the past year I’ve noticed that these issues are demanding to be heard and discussed in all contexts.
